In Detroit, strange things can happen. What does a Duke, a Former Street Doctor & Prostitute and A Pimp with a very big gun have to do with ne another in 21st City of Detroit?
Find out in Tanner’s Devil.
Can an urban woman find love in a world not her own? Or give it up and accept her fate with her ex-pimp?
Tanner knows she’s got to better her situation immensely and get out the city all together because Donetello just doesn’t want to let go. Yet, with less than twenty-four hours to raise a large amount of money, Tanner knows she has to either work her ass off literally or give up her dream and return to Donetello’s eagerly waiting arms for security and peace of mind.
Tanner’s Devil is an intriguing tale that is reminiscent of the 90’s movie, “Pretty Woman.” Tanner Tanner (yes, that’s her real name) is a street doctor who comes from a long line of self-taught women doctors who treat sex workers, pimps and drug addicts on the streets of Detroit. However, Tanner wants to become legit and enters school to become a nurse practitioner. When her benefactor dies in a car accident, to pay for her schooling, Tanner turns to prostitution.
She becomes romantically involved with her pimp who falls into a deep obsession with Tanner. He often abuses her and to cope, Tanner gets high.
After a vicious cycle of abuse and selling her body, the strong-willed Tanner cleans up her act and leaves the pimp and the life of a sex worker behind and continues with her education.
Tanner comes out of retirement when a friend, a drug addicted hooker, becomes badly injured and is unable to make her appointment with a new John. Tanner takes her friend’s place to earn money for her tuition.
The customer is a mysterious man, who hides his identity under a hat and stays mostly confined to the shadows. Tanner becomes aware that the John is a virgin and wishes to have his first experience with her. Patient, Tanner has sex with the man but finds the experience different than with any other trick. This man, though tall and solidly built, is gentle and caring. The experience for Tanner is magical, bringing her more rapture than she ever experienced.
She still feels the connection with him long after their time together is over and is surprised to learn that this mysterious stranger is a Duke and wishes to see her again!
The next meeting is a whirlwind event and the next thing Tanner knows she has married to the Duke. It’s a speedy marriage, but Tanner soon finds out that living a fairytale comes with a price.
In the beginning, this story was fast paced and intriguing. But it started lagging halfway through to the point of being boring but luckily toward the end, it became exciting and suspenseful again.
I liked Tanner because she is independent, resilient and smart as a whip. She was the only one I enjoyed, the rest came across to me as shallow and self-centred including the Duke, Devlin Sanchez. Who one minute was warm, loving and lustful toward his wife and cold and cruel the next. It was hard to keep up with Devlin’s changing moods.
Was this a true representation of the life of a sex worker? I can’t answer that with confidence because I have no knowledge of that life. What I can tell you is this, despite the grammar mistakes and a story that temporarily lagged, Tanner’s Devil is a fascinating read, and I would recommend it.
